Why you can never rely on hall lighting

Exhibition hall lighting arrives from high ceilings — shadowed, uneven and usually cold white; no venue lights your product on purpose. A stand without its own lighting scheme reads grey and flat next to lit neighbours — the most consistent difference you can observe walking any fair floor.

Because lighting is a small budget line, it is often left to the end; the correct order is the reverse. The three-layer lighting model

Professional stand lighting works in three layers: 1) the ambient layer — ceiling spots or track systems washing the whole stand evenly, so no corner reads dark from the aisle, 2) the accent layer — narrow-beam spots aimed at products, logo and message wall; this layer tells the visitor's eye where to look, 3) the decorative layer — LED strips, pendants and floor uplights that build atmosphere and brand character.

The practical ratio: accents should be roughly three times brighter than the ambient wash — without that contrast, products dissolve into the wall plane. For a mid-size stand, all three layers together run approximately €800–2,500 as of 2026.

Colour temperature and colour quality

Colour temperature shapes brand perception directly: 3000K warm white builds intimacy around timber, textiles and hospitality zones; 4000K neutral white gives technology and industrial products their clarity; above 5000K, cold white turns sterile on most stands. The golden rule is consistency — mixing temperatures within one zone is the most common mistake that makes stands look cheap.

Backlit surfaces and luminous ceilings

Internally lit tension-fabric surfaces remain the strongest lighting trend of recent years: they merge graphic and light in one element, carry evenly across distance and produce a quality perception no printed panel can match. Back walls, counter fronts and suspended ceiling rims are the highest-yield backlit locations.

Electrical power is purchased from the organiser by the kilowatt, with applications typically due 3–6 weeks before the show. LED conversion pays off here: a mid-size stand on LED fixtures usually resolves within 3–5 kW, where legacy halogen rigs consume multiples of that. Extra power requested during the show is expensive and sometimes simply unavailable — apply with headroom.
